Your Guilt Is Removed

Isaiah was a great Old Testament prophet who prophesied during the reign of four different kings of Judah. Isaiah wasn’t born a prophet; God called him to it. But first God had to get Isaiah’s attention, and he did that with a vision.

Isaiah saw a vision of the Temple. God was sitting on a majestic throne, with angels calling out, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!” God’s glory filled the Temple.

Instead of being comforted by the vision of God’s greatness, Isaiah realized how sinful he was compared to God’s holiness. He said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.”

An angel took a burning coal from the altar, carried it using tongs, and touched it to Isaiah’s lips. The angel said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” The angel didn’t mean that the coal had the power to forgive sins but that it was a symbol that God had forgiven Isaiah’s sins.

Sometimes preachers focus only on God being our friend or our Father, and we forget how majestic and holy God really is. He is far beyond anything we can imagine. He is powerful and mighty, yet in his love for us he calls us his friends because of our relationship with his Son, Jesus (see Romans 5:11).
