David spent many years caring for sheep when he was growing up. He may have used this time to play his harp while keeping watch over his flock. Perhaps he composed some of the psalms as he spent hours alone with the sheep. The time alone gave him a chance to think about God, pray, and sing. Out of that background, he wrote Psalm 23, also known as the Shepherd’s Psalm.

Jesus is called both the good shepherd and the great shepherd in the New Testament. Sheep need a shepherd. They depend on him to take them where there is food, as well as to guide and protect them. They follow the shepherd wherever he leads them because they trust him. In Psalm 23 David says that with God as his shepherd, he has everything he needs. The Lord leads him to where there are green pastures and calm waters.

God knows what we need and where to find it. He knows the path we should take to be safe and protected. When we listen to his voice and follow him, he’ll guide us safely along the path.
