Do you play a musical instrument? Perhaps you are in your school’s band. Did you know that people in Bible times played instruments? David played the harp to calm King Saul, but he wasn’t the first to play an instrument.

Jubal, mentioned in Genesis, played the flute and harp. Some Bible translations say he played the lyre and pipe, or harp and organ. He’s the first person mentioned in the Bible who played instruments. Was there music around before Jubal? There isn’t any mention of it, but it’s a possibility. Perhaps God gave Adam and Eve the gift of music.

Praising God with music is a good idea. The Bible says,

Praise the LORD with melodies on the lyre; make music for him on the ten-stringed harp. Sing a new song of praise to him; play skillfully on the harp, and sing with joy.

(Psalm 33:2-3)

I will sing a new song to you, O God! I will sing your praises with a ten-stringed harp.

(Psalm 144:9)

It isn’t just the psalmist who talks about praising God with music. The New Testament encourages believers to sing to the Lord. Check out what Ephesians 5:18-20 says to you: “Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Music, whether played on an instrument or sung, is a good way to praise God. Does the music you sing, play, or listen to do that? If not, it might be time to make some changes in your music.
