Jeremiah wrote the book of Lamentations after God allowed his people to be taken captive because of their sins. Jeremiah was deeply distressed and said, “I have cried until the tears no longer come; my heart is broken. My spirit is poured out in agony as I see the desperate plight of my people” (Lamentations 2:11). Jeremiah was known as the “weeping prophet” because he was constantly in tears over the people’s sin and the consequences of that sin.

The book of Lamentations isn’t totally full of despair, though. During the time of trouble, there was hope—not because of the people, but because of God’s compassion and mercy. If you’ve sung the hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” then you’ve sung the words of hope from Lamentations 3:22-23 (today’s Scripture).

There was hope for the people because the Lord is faithful and merciful. God wanted his people to repent and worship him and follow his ways.

God is still faithful and merciful today. Things around us change. Political leaders come and go, countries change their names and boundaries, friends grow apart or move away, teachers retire and new ones arrive, we grow older and circumstances change. But God does not change. He is always ready to forgive sins and have a relationship with the people he created.

Things in your life constantly change, but God remains the same. He is as faithful and full of mercy now as he was in Jeremiah’s time. He is ready to listen to you and help you with anything you need. Just ask and seek his answer.
