Grain Offerings

Grain Offerings

Q: Grain offerings were seasoned with what as a reminder of God’s eternal covenant?

  • a. salt
  • b. herbs
  • c. blood

Offerings were an important part of the Israelites’ lives. There were burnt offerings, grain offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings. These were for the forgiveness of sins, honoring God, and showing thankfulness. There were very strict rules regarding how the offerings were to be prepared and presented.

The grain offering was an offering people could choose to give to honor God. The grain offering was to be seasoned with salt—in order to remind the Israelites of God’s promise to always be with them.

Salt is useful in other ways too. Have you heard the saying “salt in the wound”? Salt in a wound stings, so if someone says you poured salt in his or her wound, it means you said or did something that made it hurt worse. But salt in a wound also helps defeat infection, just as God’s work in us helps defeat sin.

Salt is also used as a seasoning. Mark 9:50 says, “Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.” God wants his people to be salt in the world. Because of the hope we have in Jesus, we can make a difference to those around us by what we say and do.
