Aaron’s Family

Q: During the ordination of the priests, Aaron and his sons

  • a. tried hard to keep all of God’s rules.
  • b. kept all but one of God’s rules.
  • c. kept all of God’s rules.

Do you know what a reputation is? Your reputation is what other people think of you. Usually you earn a reputation by your actions. For instance, if you are always the first one to pick up trash in the cafeteria, fold the clothes from the dryer at home, or pass out papers in your class at church, you’ll earn a reputation for being helpful. But if you grab the first cookies out of the oven, dominate the television to make sure you get to watch your favorites, or always make sure you’re first in line, you’ll earn a reputation of being selfish.

Many times someone’s outward behavior reflects who he or she is inside. Sometimes people can fool others, though. A person might be the kindest and friendliest person at church but then act hateful and selfish at home. That person has two reputations, one at church and one at home. Sometimes a person can fool everyone, and then people are shocked when the truth comes out.

When God says something about a person, he is always right. That’s because he can see a person’s heart. That person may fool his or her family, friends, or coworkers, but not God.

The Bible says, “Aaron and his sons did everything the LORD had commanded through Moses.” This verse is specifically talking about keeping the rules for the ordination of the priests, but that was a lot of rules. Things had to be done exactly as commanded, and there were a lot of things to remember.

Sadly, later two of Aaron’s sons became careless about following God’s rules, and God destroyed them with a blast of fire (see Leviticus 10:1-2). Aren’t you glad he doesn’t do that when we fail to keep his rules?

For You

What’s your reputation with God? Can he count on you to keep his rules, or are other things more important? Don’t become lazy like Aaron’s sons. Be strong in your faith every day.
