Have you ever gone to church camp? Often there is a bonfire at the end of camp. The campers may throw a stick into the fire to symbolize their desire to follow God while all the other campers and leaders sing a song about following God. It would have been good if Lot’s wife had felt the same way.

Lot and his wife lived in Sodom. It was a wicked city, so God decided to destroy it. God sent two angels to tell Lot to get his whole family out of the city before it was too late. Lot wasn’t following God like he should have been, but he did believe the angels.

Lot tried to warn his daughters’ fiancés, but they thought he was joking. Only Lot, his wife, and their two daughters left the city. The angels told them not to look back or stop until they reached safety.

But Lot’s wife couldn’t resist the urge to look back. God turned her into a pillar of salt! That may seem like a harsh punishment, but God’s way is always right. Perhaps God knew her heart was as wicked as the other Sodom residents’. Or maybe it was a sign she didn’t want to follow God and leave the wickedness behind.

God wants us to look ahead to what he has for us, not look back and long for something else.
