Can God Count on You?

Q: God said Abraham’s descendants would be like what two things?

• a. stars in the sky and sand on the beach
• b. birds in the air and fish in the sea
• c. flowers and bees in the field

Abraham was a friend of God (read James 2:23), and God made a lot of promises to him. God told Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:2-3).

God promised to

• make Abraham’s descendants a great nation;
• bless Abraham with wealth;
• protect Abraham by blessing those who liked him and cursing those who treated him with contempt; and
• bless all families through him.

God chose to bless Abraham this way because Abraham believed in God, and God knew he could count on him.

There are people you count on every day. Your parents provide your meals, wash your clothes, and make sure you have what you need. You know there will be food on the table and clean clothes to wear. Your parents count on you for things too. Maybe it’s your job to take the trash out or to wash the dishes. If you do your jobs well, your parents will see how dependable you are.

How about God? Can he count on you? God needs people today who will hear his voice and follow him just as he needed people to hear and follow him in Abraham’s day. Are you one of them?

For You

Are you faithful in reading your Bible and praying each day? Are you dependable in following God’s rules and trying to live the way he wants you to? If you are, God will be able to count on you like he counted on Abraham.

Answer: a

I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.   Genesis 22:17
