You Have Eternal Life

You Have Eternal Life

[Jesus said,] “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”

John 5:24

TRADITIONALLY WHEN WE think about the concept of eternal life, we picture a future reality that exists in complete separation from our life on earth. For most Christians, eternal life is directly connected with the concept of heaven—it’s a state of being that starts after we experience physical death and continues forever.

According to Jesus’ words in this verse, however, that understanding of eternal life misses the mark; it’s not completely correct. Jesus started with a conditional statement. He spoke to those who listen to his message and “believe in God”—meaning, he was talking to Christians. But then notice what he says next: such people “have eternal life.”

As Christians, we have eternal life. It’s not something we’re waiting to experience; rather, it’s in our grasp right now. We have it inside of us! Jesus reiterates this idea at the end of the verse: we as Christians will “never be condemned for [our] sins” (which is great news), and we “have already passed from death into life.”

Think about that word already. Eternal life is something that’s already happened. As a follower of Jesus, it’s something that you’re already experiencing. That’s a promise directly from Jesus’ lips: as someone saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, you are already experiencing eternal life. Will things get even better once we enter into heaven? Of course. But God’s promise to you is that your eternal relationship with him is already in full swing. So rejoice!
