Work For Good

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Romans 8:28

PERHAPS THE GREATEST promise in all of Scripture, today’s verse assures us of several things. One is that God really is in charge of the events in our lives. That doesn’t necessarily mean that he causes them. But everything that happens to us is known to God and under his control.

Think of people such as Moses, who killed an Egyptian taskmaster. Moses fled from Pharaoh and spent the next forty years in the desert as a lowly shepherd. But God had not forgotten him. In fact, God probably used that time to help build qualities such as perseverance, determination, and humility into Moses’ life. After those forty years, when God called Moses to return to Egypt, he went, and he became one of the greatest leaders in human history.

The second truth in the verse above relates to the word everything. Nothing in your life happens by accident. Nothing.

A third truth is that God makes everything “work together for . . . good.” Somehow, even the bad things in our lives can be stitched together by God for our good. We may not see it right away, but he will make it all clear in time.

Last, he does this only for his children. Just as with Moses, God will work for good in our lives when bad things happen.

It’s a great truth to hold on to in good times and bad. It’s a promise that we can trust no matter how difficult things seem at any given moment.
