The Promise Of Comfort

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Psalm 23:4

IT WAS ELEVEN at night when seven-year-old Liz was awakened by her dog barking at her bedroom window. Liz peeked out to see a man walking toward the front door. Dad was already taking care of the matter, but instantly Liz dashed into Mom’s room. And, of course, Mom not only reassured Liz of her protection but also quieted her fears.

Comforting others is such a big part of life. It is so important that we comfort children after the painful and frightening moments in their lives and that we comfort friends when they face challenges, giving them hope that they will prevail. Encouragement during difficult times helps remind others that they’re not alone in what they’re experiencing. It brings them reassurance that others care.

That’s what’s special about this promise in the Bible. It reminds us not only that God is concerned about our spiritual and physical well-being but also that he cares about our emotional stability. He is concerned when we’re afraid. He understands when we doubt. He is near when we’re heartbroken and uncertain. He is ready and willing to reassure and comfort us, to remind us that he will work all things out in the long run.

The God who created us—including our emotions—promises not only to protect us from harm but also to lavish on us the emotional support we need in life’s dark moments.
