The Heavens

Your unfailing love, O LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds.

Psalm 36:5

ONE EVENING GERALD took his kids out to study the heavens. Having a longtime interest in the constellations and the stories about them, he pointed out the Big and Little Dippers, Cassiopeia, Orion, and other easy-to-see pictures in the sky.

But one day, he came upon this verse and realized all those stories were insignificant next to this truth. He took the kids out again and said, “Look at how big and wide and long and high the heavens are. But they’re just a little bit of space compared to God’s perfect, unfailing love.”

He explained how he had seen God come through for him in his life over and over, from meeting and marrying their mom to finding a job he loved and working in a church where he could build up others.

Tears came to his eyes as he looked back on his life and saw all the small and great and intricate ways God had blessed him. It was a turning point in his life as the leader of his family. In time, all his kids came to Christ as he taught them about God’s “unfailing love.”

When you entrust yourself to God’s love and care, you have signed on with someone who possesses “unfailing love” and unending “faithfulness.” That means God will never fail you. All his promises hold at all times, even though sometimes you have to wait patiently for his timing in carrying them out. Just as he manages the stars and the entire universe, so he can manage your life and follow through with his great plans for you. He is eternally faithful.
