Set Your Face

Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.

Isaiah 50:7

STONE MOUNTAIN PARK is a popular attraction outside of Atlanta. The park boasts authentic plantation buildings, a pioneer village, a museum, a steamboat, a train, a laser show, and more. But the center and highlight of the park is Stone Mountain itself.

Some people say Stone Mountain is the largest exposed granite stone in the world. It has no trees or vegetation atop it—or not enough to matter. It’s a big rock standing 825 feet high, and its top is 1,683 feet above sea level. On one side of the mountain is the world’s largest relief sculpture, depicting three confederate heroes on their horses.

No matter how many times you visit the mountain or how long you gaze at the carving, it stays the same. The generals’ faces will forever look in the same direction they’re facing. Stone faces don’t have the option of turning around and looking back the other way.

When it comes to following the Lord, Scripture tells us our “faces” should be like those in this carving—set in one direction, the direction of following the Lord.

When we’re tempted to let ourselves be distracted by sin and other problems, let’s remember those confederate generals and keep our direction set, determined to do God’s will! We will not be put to shame.
