Salt

You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.

Matthew 5:13-14

SALT IS GOOD for many things. For one thing, it simply makes food taste better. Meat, vegetables, and even some drinks are bland without salt. Salt spices things up.

It also can be used in healing. Soldiers often packed salt into a battle wound to enable the body to heal itself more quickly.

The expression “He’s worth his salt” came from Roman times, when soldiers were actually paid in bags of salt.

Another thing salt does is preserve meats and vegetables for later use. Beef jerky, salt pork, and numerous other items can be saved for months and years with a little salt because it’s such a great preservative.

Being salt, then, means several things: giving the world a good taste of God and his Kingdom, providing healing and help to the needy, and acting as a preservative against the power and progress of evil.

Does that describe you? Jesus tells us he wants us to be like salt. Those who are gain help from God in furthering his Kingdom and preserving the good that is in the world.
