Rejoicing

We can rejoice . . . when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

Romans 5:3-4

LOOK AT THE progression in these verses. First, we rejoice in our problems and trials because we know they develop our ability to endure. As we grow in that area, God builds strength of character in our lives. That is, enduring through tough situations is what leads to our growing in love for the unlovely, patience in trying circumstances, and joy in the midst of trouble.

As we grow in character, another quality develops too: we grow in confidence and in our hope of salvation. The more we draw near to God through the problems of life, the more we learn to trust him and have confidence in his love and his goodness.

God is working with you right now to build these kinds of qualities in your life. Thus, the question is, Are you rejoicing in “problems and trials”? Are you letting God hone you, guide you, empower you? Are you trusting him and turning to him for help and hope? As you learn to do those things, you will become a more confident and joyful Christian. His promise is that he will use your character to impress others with the hope of his salvation.
