Overwhelming Victory
Overwhelming Victory
Overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
Romans 8:37
HAVE YOU EVER seen an “overwhelming victory” against all odds? In our world, it is rare. How many people totally beat terminal cancer? Small countries don’t crush superpowers in war. The ravages of the forces of nature can only be deflected, not stopped. And even our personality deficiencies and bad habits can rarely be eliminated 100 percent.
Other battles may come to your mind, but in today’s verse, Paul refers to the overwhelming victory of all time, when Christ defeated Satan at the cross. For millennia, Satan had roamed the earth, disparaging God to his face and destroying the lives of his people, with what seemed to be no consequences. But then Jesus came along and dealt Satan a serious blow. In the end, Jesus so completely defeated Satan by dying on the cross and rising again that Satan’s best weapons—lies, accusations, and the specter of death over every person—were finished in one fell swoop.
Jesus’ victory was overwhelming because of how great the enemy was. No other man could ever have stood against Satan. But Jesus did. And his promise is that when we stand with him, the victory is ours, too.
