Living Water
Living Water
[Jesus said,] “Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
John 4:14
LIVING WATER. JESUS spoke of it in various places in the Gospels. These words, spoken to a Samaritan woman at a well, must have intrigued her greatly. Every day, one of her chores involved walking to the local well and dipping her large jar into it to retrieve the needed refreshment for the day. This woman, because she was a social outcast, came at a time when the other women weren’t present, perhaps during the hottest parts of the day. This made her chore even more complicated and, perhaps, hateful.
Thus, when Jesus engaged her in conversation and offered her living water, she leaped at the prospect, saying, “Give me this water!” (John 41:1-15). Jesus, though, wasn’t speaking of physical water—unfortunately, she’d always have to contend with that issue. But the water he could give was spiritual. This water is the Holy Spirit, who dwells in every believer. Through him, a Christian receives comfort, encouragement, conviction, guidance, deep peace, and many other things so needed in today’s world.
Do you find yourself thirsty for a spiritual drink at times? Avail yourself of God’s promise—he has given the Spirit to all who believe.
