If You Do Not . . .

If you fear and worship the LORD and listen to his voice, and if you do not rebel against the LORD’s commands, then both you and your king will show that you recognize the LORD as your God. But if you rebel against the LORD’s commands and refuse to listen to him, then his hand will be as heavy upon you as it was upon your ancestors.

1 Samuel 12:14-15

SAMUEL’S SPEECH TO the people of Israel as they received their new king, Saul, applies to any nation that seeks to honor God. Those in America and other nations where God is remembered and worshiped should take these things to heart.

First, fear and worship God, and listen to his voice. What is God telling you personally today? What does that “still small voice” deep in your heart counsel? Don’t worry about everyone else. Many in your country may have no real beliefs or commitment to God. But God knows who you are and what you’re doing. You keep doing what’s right before God, and he will bless you.

Second, refuse the impulse to rebel. There will always be times when you don’t like what God may want you to do. To witness to that nasty neighbor. To admit some wrongdoing at your place of work. To apologize to a spouse or relative about something you know is wrong. Hear God’s voice in your heart and obey, even if it hurts. God will bless you for your commitment and trust.

Third, realize that a big reason entire nations get into turmoil and trouble is because so many of their people have rebelled against God and the truth. If where you live is experiencing some upheaval—even conflict, maybe war—look back to God. Get yourself right with him, and encourage others to follow. That is the only way to bring God’s mercy and favor back to your land.
