God Has Chosen The Poor

Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?

James 2:5

OUR WORLD IS so judgmental. Sheila, a single mom and immigrant, feels it in the stares people sometimes give her when she makes a mistake speaking her new language. Nathan, a homeless man, spends most of his time hiding in alleys because of the way the world treats him when he ventures out. Poor people everywhere know what happens when they walk into a restaurant or a store wearing shabby clothing. At times they’re even asked to leave. People who can’t pay their bills get nasty calls from bill collectors.

But God sees people differently. The poor are often the people who are rich in faith. He chooses many of them to be his, and he often overlooks the self-satisfied, proud, arrogant, rich people. Why? Because poor people know their needs, and they often respond gladly to God’s call. Rich people, though, often don’t see any need of God.

When you’re tempted to judge people by their looks, clothing, car, house, or other standards, remember they are as much God’s chosen as you are. And God promises to treat you well when you treat them well.
