Humility

You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness.

Psalm 18:27-28

HUMILITY IS ONE of those traits that are so hard to come by. Some say the moment you think you have it, you’ve lost it. In fact, when you truly do demonstrate humility, you probably won’t even know it. In fact, you may think you’re showing only pride and arrogance, when in the eyes of others you may be truly humble and gentle in ways that amaze them.

How does that work? When you learn true humility, you become others centered. You stop thinking of yourself all the time—how an event affects you, how a situation can mess up your life. Instead, you look at the needs of others, and you get involved trying to meet those needs. You care about people, and that care leads you to take action. When you’ve taken action, you might feel as if you didn’t do enough. But the people you helped will see the truth: you’re a person who really loves and cares, and that will thrill them and glorify God at the same time.

It also means you will sometimes get into trouble. Your care, love, and willingness to help others will make some people angry. They might not like your reaching out like that. And they might attack you for it.

That’s where this verse comes in: God promises to rescue the humble. Every time.
