God’s Love Never Ends

The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.

Lamentations 3:22-23

DO YOU CONSIDER yourself a morning person? Some people like waking up from a good rest, grabbing some breakfast and a cup of coffee, and preparing for the excitement of a new day. Others prefer to hit the snooze button three or four times before stumbling into the shower.

Regardless of your personal preferences, one of the best things about mornings is the certainty of their coming. No matter how dark the night may be, we know that sooner or later the sun will appear—light will come to chase away the darkness. Mornings are something on which we can count. We can find comfort in the reliability of each new day.

In these verses, the prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God’s love, mercy, and faithfulness are as reliable as the dawn. They are new every morning. Nothing can stop them, and nothing can stop us from experiencing them if we’re willing to seek God and follow him each day.

What’s especially remarkable about this promise from Jeremiah is that it comes from the book of Lamentations—a book written during one of the darkest moments in Israel’s history. Jeremiah and his people had experienced calamity after calamity. They were suffering, and yet they still found comfort and hope in the certainty of God’s continued mercy, faithfulness, and love. God has promised that same mercy, faithfulness, and love to you in your darkest moments.
