Capture Those Thoughts

We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5

ONE AFTERNOON AS Jane puttered around among the shelves of the store she worked in, straightening and restocking products, she overheard one of her coworkers talking to their boss about Christ. It seemed for every word the coworker offered, the boss batted it down with wit and scorn.

After listening for a moment, Jane walked over. “What’s the problem?” she asked. The coworker said, “Samantha thinks the Bible is just another book written by men. She thinks most of it was made up.” Jane thought a moment, then pulled out a pocket Bible and read from 2 Timothy 3:16, about how all Scripture is inspired by God. When she was done, she looked up at Samantha. Instead of her usual sarcastic remark, Samantha just shrugged and said, “Fine, you believe it. Fine. I don’t.” She walked away.

That story illustrates the above passage from Paul. Human arguments often fail, but God’s weapons—his Word, his Spirit, his wisdom—knock down even the most scornful. His promise is that if you use such weapons, you will eventually see success in telling the world the truth.
