Pull Up a Chair

Lady Wisdom has built and furnished her home; it’s supported by seven hewn timbers. The banquet meal is ready to be served: lamb roasted, wine poured out, table set with silver and flowers. Having dismissed her serving maids, Lady Wisdom goes to town, stands in a prominent place, and invites everyone within sound of her voice: “Are you confused about life, don’t know what’s going on? Come with me, oh come, have dinner with me! I’ve prepared a wonderful spread—fresh-baked bread, roast lamb, carefully selected wines. Leave your impoverished confusion and live! Walk up the street to a life with meaning.”

My friend Suzanne Woods Fisher used to have a radio show called Amish Wisdom that I loved to listen to. The goal of the show was to interview those who interact with the Amish to discover simple living, everyday joys, and the greater value of family, community, and church. The Amish may not know how to Google, drive a car, or install an app on a smartphone, but they have wisdom concerning the things that really matter.

The world offers knowledge, but wisdom comes from God. Wisdom means more than making a right choice; it involves turning to God to discover the best choice. It’s not about trying to figure things out; it’s about turning to God’s Word and being willing to partake of the banquet of truth that God has already spread before us.

When I ponder the word banquet, I think about the Bible stories I heard as a child. I learned about a banqueting table God has prepared for us. Someday in eternity, we’ll be able to sit down and partake. But the more I seek wisdom—and listen to those who have it—the more I realize I don’t have to wait until eternity. All I have to do is pull up a chair.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for providing a banqueting table filled with truth. I desire wisdom more than knowledge, for it’s there I will find guidance and truth. Thank You for both.
