Our Word

Most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

James 5:12

“You’re only as good as your word.” You may have heard your parents or grandparents say this, but is this virtue still valued today? I’m guilty of tossing around words with my children: “Maybe later we’re going to the park.” “Maybe after dinner we’ll make cookies.” Keeping my word—not just big ones but small ones too—is something I’m working on.

Words carry great weight to the Amish. The most significant words an Amish person will utter are when he or she “bends at the knee” and chooses to become baptized as a church member. That one decision weighs heavily on an Amish youth, and from it springs forth all other decisions. Adult baptism is sacred to the Amish, linked to the sacrifices of their ancestors. It can be a very emotional experience, even for a people who keep their feelings under a tight rein.

If an Amish person chooses to leave the church before becoming baptized as a member, they are not under the ban—known as excommunication. Nor will they be shunned. But if they leave after they have become baptized, the ban will be enforced and the consequences of leaving are harsh. . . .

“Oaths are to be made only to God, binding for life,” says Norman. All the brightness leaves him, like a cloud swallowing up the sun. “But some do leave. Some leave under the ban.” He releases a deep sigh. “They broke a promise, you see.”

How diligent are you at sticking to your word? Can others trust you to do what you say? Can God trust you to follow through with your promises to Him? Your friends and family can trust your big promises only if they already trust your small promises.

God’s Word is clear that oaths are a serious matter. How would your life change if you took your words more seriously?

Dear heavenly Father, You say our words can bring blessing and cursing. Help me to better understand the power of my words.
