Light. Life. Growth.

The Word gave life to everything that was created,

John 1:4

Amish women spend spring and summer tending gardens. Their schedule changes with the seasons, mostly because of the additional daylight. Light in the spring warms the ground and prepares it for planting. Growth is possible because of the light. Later in the year, the decrease in daylight cools the earth and prepares plants for harvest.

Have you ever considered the impact of light in our lives? The sunrise limits the length of our present night. The moon and stars limit its depth. Yet in our world, it is easy to flood our lives with artificial light. Light gives us a sense of safety. It gives us more time to be active, and we often increase the length of the workday, sometimes beyond what is healthy for us.

The essence of light is both physical and spiritual: “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life’” (John 8:12).

Just as light brings life to the earth, the light of Jesus brings life into our lives. When we read His Word, the light of His truth enters our hearts and softens them. With Jesus, even the darkest trials don’t last forever. Their depth can only go so far.

Do you sometimes look for safety and productivity in places or people other than Jesus? You may be able to keep darkness at bay temporarily, but only the true light of Jesus can produce life and growth in you. Only with Jesus can a harvest of righteousness be birthed within you.

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for Jesus, the Light of the World. Fill me with Your light today. Soften my heart so the seeds of Your Word can take root and grow deep within me.
