A Woman of Beauty

I want women to be modest in their appearance. They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes. For women who claim to be devoted to God should make themselves attractive by the good things they do.

1 Timothy 2:9-10

Can you imagine waking up every day and knowing exactly what you were going to wear because it was the same thing you wore yesterday and the day before that? And the day before that?

Most Amish women’s outfits have the same four elements: the dress, the apron, the kapp, and a cape. In Lancaster, Pennsylvania, dresses are a dark, solid color. The colors vary in other parts of the country, and in some districts the Amish can even be seen wearing pastels. The apron ties at the waist, and the cape covers the top half of the body.

In many districts straight pins rather than buttons are used to fasten the garments. Nothing about what Amish women wear draws attention to a woman’s body, and all garments are handmade. Women also bind their hair in a braid or bun and cover it with a black or white kapp (cap). The color and style depend on the district, but most kapps are white or black.

Although it’s not necessary to wear Amish dress to be modest or godly, God does say that our adornment should come from the good things we do.

Consider some of the most beautiful women you know. When you think of those women, do you think of what they wear or of the glow of their smiles and the twinkle in their eyes as they love and serve those around them? A runway model can’t compare to the beauty of a woman who joyfully serves her family or cares for someone in need. Devotion to God and others is the most beautiful accessory there is!
