Little Mercies In Mourning
Little Mercies in Mourning
“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” (Lamentations 3:22-23, NLT)
In grief and darkness, in the long and silent seasons after spiritual trauma, there are small, unexpected moments that feel like an exhale for the soul. An aligning of the stars. A phrase in a book that is exactly what you had been thinking. A text from someone that settles your soul, right when you needed it. A kindness from a stranger that feels like it comes from Christ himself. These little mercies don’t announce themselves. They slip in quietly. And you have to be open to them and catch them. But when you do, it begins to awaken parts of your soul that have been there all along—the deeply settled, courageous, and whole person that God has created in your inmost being.
Little mercies are personal, sacred moments that are just for you—like God tangibly showing you that he is with you and sees you. I can’t tell you where they will come or when. But what I can tell you is that while darkness exists, so does light. And you were made for light. If you stay open, if you look for them, they will visit you and revive your soul.
I want to invite you to become a collector of little mercies. Not to manufacture them or force yourself to be more spiritually attentive than you are. Just notice. Maybe that was God’s presence—an unexpected beauty that felt too specific and personal.
You don’t have to be healed to receive these mercies. Lamentations 3 alludes to being in darkness while experiencing these mercies. You just have to be here—in this present moment. And the God of morning and night remains, in new mercies, for exactly where you are.
Moment to Reflect
- Looking back at this week or even the past month, was there a small moment that felt like a breadcrumb—a tiny spark of presence, connection, or unexpected goodness?
- What parts of your soul—if any—did you sense within when you came across a little mercy?
Simple Prayer
God, I’m looking for you in the small things. Help me notice when you show up in the quiet and the ordinary. And on the days that I can’t see you at all, continue to pursue me and reveal your presence. Amen.
