Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs 4:23

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Have you ever reacted to something that happened, only to find yourself surprised by the words that came out of your mouth or the intensity of your emotions? We often think that circumstances cause us to act in a certain way, but the truth is, circumstances trigger feelings that were already in our hearts. The book of Proverbs talks about the heart as the center of our thoughts and feelings. Every action and word flows from the heart; therefore it is important to be aware of what we let into it. When we fail to protect our hearts, we lose sensitivity to what is good and what is harmful. What would it look like to guard your heart? How can you be cautious about what you hear, see, watch, and choose to dwell on?
