Worth It or a Waste?

This is what the LORD says: “What did your ancestors find wrong with me that led them to stray so far from me? They worshiped worthless idols, only to become worthless themselves.”

Jeremiah 2:5

What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 16:26

Everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

Philippians 3:8

Do you ever find yourself doing something and wondering, Will this really be worth it? Will being on the team be worth all the hours of practice? Will getting good grades be worth the study time? Will the promotion be worth the overtime? Will the flat stomach be worth the nightly sit-ups?

We come to Jesus with the same question, although we probably wouldn’t say it quite so bluntly. Jesus, are you worth it? Jesus, are you worth the bother, the commitment, the potential ridicule, the perseverance? What is in the future that will make it worth my while to trust you now?

Revelation 5 describes the end of time, when the final accounting is done, when we finally discover what was worthy of our best energies and investment. Verse 12 says, “They sang in a mighty chorus: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.’”

Of course, we can hardly imagine that day now, and sometimes it doesn’t seem real. But we can be confident of what Scripture tells us. One day we will discover, if we haven’t already, that the Lamb is worthy. Jesus is worth it. Jesus is worth seeking after. He’s worth the sacrifice and the suffering. We won’t be disappointed. He’s worth it.
