An Anchor of Hope

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.

Ever since there have been boats on the water, there have been anchors. The earliest anchors were probably rocks with a pair of wooden arms that sunk into the seafloor to keep a ship in a specific place. When an anchor is firm, a ship—and the people on it—are secure. Even if the winds blow hard, the ship won’t crash against the rocks or float out into the rough seas.

Hebrews describes our hope in Jesus and his promises as an “anchor for our souls.” This anchor isn’t hurled into the depths of the sea but rises through the heights into heaven—into the very throne room of God. This anchor embeds itself in the pure soil of heaven. Because God has given us this anchor, nothing can throw us off course or destroy us.

This confidence in our security is meant to give us hope. Not optimism or good feelings, but solid confidence. In other words, our hope in Jesus is not risky or uncertain. It is “strong and trustworthy,” like a boat held in place by a solid anchor. We don’t have to be afraid that God won’t keep his promises to us, and we don’t have to be afraid that the difficulties of this world will throw our lives off course or crush us. Our security isn’t found in our bank accounts, our good grades, our insurance policies, or our own abilities. Our security is in Jesus alone, and we’re safe. Jesus offers himself to us as an “anchor for the soul.”
