Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant?

2 Samuel 23:5

First notice that the covenant mentioned here is of divine origin. “Has HE not made with me an everlasting covenant?” Oh, that great word He! Be still, my soul, for God, the everlasting Father, has made a covenant with me. Yes, the God who spoke the world into existence by His Word, stooping from His majesty, took hold of my hand and made a covenant with me. This isn’t just any deed but a stupendous condescension that would enrapture our hearts forever if we could fully understand it. “Has HE not made with me an everlasting covenant?” He isn’t simply a king—as great as that would be—but the “KING OF KINGS” (Rev. 19:16); El Shaddai, or God Almighty, who is the all-sufficient Lord; the Jehovah of the ages; the everlasting Elohim. “Has HE not made with me an everlasting covenant?”

Next notice the definite object of the covenant: “Has he not made with ME an everlasting covenant?” In this lies the true preciousness for every believer, for He made peace with the world for ME! It is one thing that He made a covenant but quite another that He has made a covenant with ME. What blessed assurance—the covenant is with ME! If God the Holy Spirit has given me that assurance, then His salvation is mine, His heart is mine, He Himself is mine—“He is my God” (Ex. 15:2).

Finally notice that the covenant is everlasting in its duration. An everlasting covenant is one that has no beginning and one that will never end. Amid all the uncertainties of life, how precious to know that “God’s solid foundation stands firm” (2 Tim. 2:19) and to have the Lord’s own promise: “I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered” (Ps. 89:34).

Like King David as he was dying, I will sing of this: “Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant?” (2 Sam. 23:5).

God’s covenant of grace is revealed in various covenants in the Scriptures, such as this covenant with David, referred to in today’s text:

When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men…But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.

Later we are given David’s beautiful last words:

The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: “When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.” Is not my house right with God? Has he not made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part? Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire?
