Magnificent Prayer #54
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Acts 2:42
In the early church the prayers were simple, unpremeditated, and united. [No matter who uttered them]—the well-taught apostle, the accomplished scholar, the rough but fervent peasant, the new and zealous convert—their prayers sought God and wrestled with an instant and irrepressible urgency. As such their prayers were an essential part of the beginnings of Christianity, a faith kindled by holy fire and fanned by the daily prayers of the early believers.

Pray About It: When we pray, we’re taking up the mantle of a two-thousand-year-old practice. Prayers, of course, were offered before Christ, but at Pentecost, with the imparting of the Holy Spirit to the church, a new era began. By their “devoting themselves to prayer,” the early disciples set in motion a chain of events that have led to this very day, and which are yet to be fulfilled at the return of Christ.
As we pray today, we should see ourselves as part of a relay team of sorts. The baton of prayer has been passed to us. For our entire lives, we live as pray-ers, urging the church on toward God’s finish line at the culmination of human history.
Consider the privilege we are granted in being a part of such a holy mission. Thank Him today for your part on God’s relay team of prayers.
God provides the men and women needed for each generation.
