Magnificent Prayer #29

Magnificent Prayer #29

About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray.

Acts 10:9

Which forms of prayer are best? There is no rule of thumb, for the reason that every thumbprint is different and distinct. Some habit of prayer is clearly wise, for all life is built on habit; but the habit should be under frequent scrutiny lest it harden into a confining shell.

GEORGE BUTTRICK

Pray About It: The secret life of prayer is very personal. Some may pray best on their knees. Others may stand and pace. Yet others feel the need to lay flat on their faces, prostrate before God. Some may, with full passion, pray written prayers that convey their heart’s desire. Others will shun written prayers for spontaneous supplications.

The main thing is that prayer be fresh, not hardened “into a confining shell.” Today, if you sense that your form of prayer has become simply that—a form—try changing your habit. The result may be a renewal of prayer power.

No one can prescribe for another. Let each be persuaded in his own mind how to pray, and the Holy Spirit will inspire us and guide us how long to pray. And let us all be so full of the love of God our Savior that prayer, at all times and in all places, may be a joy as well as a means of grace.
