The history of revival shows plainly that all movements of the Spirit started in prayer. It is right there that many of us wilt and falter at the cost. Pentecost and all subsequent outpourings of the Spirit resulted from prayer. The same was true during the mighty spiritual upheavals in Reformation times—Luther, Knox and the Moravians at Herrnhut in 1727. Hourly intercession by relays, praying without ceasing, went on for 100 years. It led to the beginning of modern foreign missions. Why should we not match the Moravian movement today? Has the Eternal Spirit grown weary? Not likely. We may count on it that the blessing is waiting for us if we will only get down on our knees and ask for it. In latter days the same principle of prayer holds—revivals under Wesley, Finney, Spurgeon, Moody, Torrey, and the Welsh revival—all resulted from prayer.

Pray About It: All revivals issue from prayer. Perhaps the greatest prayer movement in history was that of the Moravians, as Jonathan Goforth mentions. This great prayer meeting, which began on August 13, 1727, at Herrnhut (“the Lord’s watch”), a small colony founded by Count Nicholaus von Zinzindorf, lasted around the clock for one hundred years. From it came the modern missionary movement as more than a hundred missionaries were sent out from that colony in twenty-five years.
Secular historians won’t mention the true reasons for many of the world’s major events—but any praying Christian understands the profound influence prayer has on history.
Christians who pray are helpers and saviors, yea, masters and gods of the world. They are the legs which bear the world.
