Magnificent Prayer #109

Magnificent Prayer #109

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7

Cultivate a holy calm as a preparation for private prayer. As a lake while it is ruffled, can not reflect the over-arching heavens; so your heart while disturbed and distracted, can not reflect the face of God. Wait before God until you are at peace.

ARTHUR T. PIERSON

Pray About It: If we rush into God’s presence with the cares of the world attached to our hearts, we won’t be able to enter God’s presence. He is a calm God and responds to us best when we are at peace. Take a minute before you pray and be silent. The old-time Quakers used to call this “centering.” It means getting to the place where God has your full attention. For this, there must be calm.

Today, center on God.

Keep the inward watch, keep a clear soul and a light heart. Mind an inward sense upon doing anything.
