Down, But Not Out

Down, but Not Out

When we find ourselves in difficult circumstances, especially in seasons where trouble seems to come in waves, we see ourselves for what we really are. Our souls are laid bare. Our limitations, vulnerability, and weaknesses are exposed, as well as our inability to do anything to save ourselves.

The situation for each one might be different: a broken marriage, a prodigal or otherwise seemingly impossible child, financial issues, loneliness, failure, broken dreams. Whatever the situation, we feel alone, unnoticed, helpless.

Of course, this is the place where God can teach us to rely on Him completely. He so desires to be the One who fulfills our greatest longings. He wants us to know His voice of guidance, purpose, love, and mercy.

It seems those who are wisest, most true, and deepest in humility and gentleness have had to walk through many such times of doubt and testing. Because they have lived through those times, they are deeper, more aware of their need for God, more thankful for His mercy, more focused on eternity, more compassionate toward those who are lost, and more humble in their demeanor.

Sometimes, in all of our efforts to control life and to accomplish our works, we subtly think our success depends on ourselves. Our happiness can be found by striving enough. A loving Father must bring us to the edge of our own limitations, so that we can live above our mere worldly focus and become more familiar with His strength and mercy and love and ways.

His Promises

Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.

John 15:5

Blessed is the man who makes

the LORD his trust.

Psalm 40:4, ESV

This is what the Sovereign Lord,

the Holy One of Israel, says:

“Only in returning to me

and resting in me will you be saved.

In quietness and confidence is your strength.”

Isaiah 30:15
