Words That Bring Healing - In the Morning When I Rise
Words That Bring Healing
Lord, how can I best receive criticism?
Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness I desire. A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted. If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise. Timely advice is lovely, like golden apples in a silver basket. To one who listens, valid criticism is like a gold earring or other gold jewelry.
James 1:19-20; Proverbs 12:16; Proverbs 15:31; Proverbs 25:11-12
How can I give constructive advice?
Let us aim for harmony . . . and try to build each other up. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. Don’t speak evil against others. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then my love and peace will be with you.
Romans 14:19; Ephesians 4:29; Proverbs 12:18; James 4:11; 2 Corinthians 13:11
What can I pray when I am criticized or feel tempted to criticize others?
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Psalm 19:14
Criticism, constructive or not, is often hard to swallow. Constructive advice, though it may hurt, can bring about important growth. Have you ever received advice that hurt at the time but later facilitated change and growth in your life? How did you receive that advice? This morning, ask God for an openness to constructive advice from others and help to discern words of healing from voices of criticism. If you are in a relationship where you are constantly criticized and hurt verbally, please seek help. Abuse, even if it is verbal, is very different from helpful and timely advice.
