You Aren’t Alone In The Pit Of Grief
You Aren’t Alone In The Pit Of Grief
Lord, is there something wrong with me if I’m still feeling sad long after a great loss?
For everything there is a season. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.
Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4; Isaiah 43:2, 5; John 16:33
How do you come alongside me in my grief?
I am close to the brokenhearted; I rescue those whose spirits are crushed. And the Holy Spirit helps you in your weakness. For example, you don’t know what I want you to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for you with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
Psalm 34:18; Romans 8:26
What can I pray in my moments of grief?
You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. Now let your unfailing love comfort me, just as you promised me. Lord, your faithful love never ends! Your mercies never cease. Great is your faithfulness; your mercies begin afresh each morning.
Psalm 56:8; Psalm 119:76; Lamentations 3:22-23
God doesn’t give us a timeline for getting over our grief. But when sorrow becomes a part of our story, he promises to comfort us. Deep grief over a loss shows how deeply you allowed yourself to love. When it is time, God will begin to create space in your heart so you can embrace the next chapter in life. Until then, allow yourself the time to grieve. Reread the verses above to remind yourself that God is with you and is comforting you in your pain.
