When Life Feels Unsatisfying

When Life Feels Unsatisfying

Lord, why do I sometimes feel so empty inside?

Idols are all foolish, worthless things. All your idols are as empty as the wind. Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life.

Isaiah 41:29; Isaiah 55:2; John 6:35; Isaiah 55:3

What is the secret to a truly fulfilling life?

In Christ lives all the fullness of me in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with him, who is the head over every ruler and authority. My purpose is to give you a rich and satisfying life.

Colossians 2:9-10; John 10:10

What can I pray when my life feels empty?

Let all that I am praise you, LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise your holy name. Let all that I am praise you, LORD; may I never forget the good things you do for me. You fill my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

Psalm 103:1-2, 5

Jesus often used images of food and drink (the bread and the cup) as analogies for our spiritual dependence on him. Just as our bodies depend on nourishment from food to sustain us, so our souls depend on the gracious work of Jesus Christ. Next time you celebrate Communion, reflect on the truth that God is the nourishment and satisfaction your heart most longs for.
