Lord, what does it mean to be filled with your Spirit?

When you believed in me, I identified you as my own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom I promised long ago. The Spirit is my guarantee that I will give you the inheritance I promised and that I have purchased you to be mine. I did this so you would praise and glorify me. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

If I have your Spirit in me, why do I still struggle to do what’s right?

You want to do what is right, but you can’t. You want to do what is good, but you don’t. You don’t want to do what is wrong, but you do it anyway. But if you do what you don’t want to do, you are not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in you that does it. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives you desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

What can I pray when I doubt the Holy Spirit’s presence?

I have received your Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so I can know the wonderful things you have freely given me. For your Spirit joins with my spirit to affirm that I am your child. Thank you, God, that I can never escape from your Spirit!
