Costly Love

To love the Lord my God with all my soul will involve a spiritual cost. I’ll have to give Him my heart, and let Him love through it whom and how He wills, even if this seems at times to break my heart.

I know you are struggling with this reality right now—not everyone will love you. Often, the greatest hurts come because the person from whom you most long to receive affirmation, encouragement, approval, and love is the person who shuts you out, emotionally and physically. It’s a severe rejection that tears your heart apart—especially when everyone around you is receiving unconditional love from their family members.

I am asking you to love that person even if your kindness, goodness, and mercy are not returned. Do your loving acts as if you are doing them to Me. Those around you may know what it costs you to serve without thanks, or to minister to the dying, or to extend kindness to the one who rejects you. The Bible says, “Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning” (2 John 1:6). Your costly love does not go unnoticed by Me.

Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
