Quieting The Noise
Quieting the Noise
The Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.
Habakkuk 2:20
We live in a world of noise, interruptions, and distractions where people, activities, and electronic devices are constantly vying for our attention. Because of this, many people experience silence as unfamiliar and uncomfortable.
So does silence really have a purpose? Is it even important in our relationship with God? Silence creates a space to hear from God more clearly. Practicing silence isn’t only for the sake of “peace and quiet.” Silence quiets the inner and outer voices in our days so that we can be alert and better listen to God.
This week, remind yourself that hearing God speak isn’t the goal of silence. The goal is simply to show up and say, “God, I am listening if you have anything to say to me.” And if God does decide to speak, then accept it as a gift! Lean into the discomfort of silence and learn to become more comfortable in the quiet. Each time you sit in silence with God, he is slowly teaching you to recognize his voice.
