Open Your Home and Your Heart

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

Hebrews 13:2

Many people avoid hospitality because they feel that their homes or cooking skills are inadequate. Some may find it difficult to share their time, space, and resources. Jesus didn’t have a home, yet he was constantly welcoming people into his presence.

We are called to do likewise with the resources we have—to graciously receive others into our homes, feed them, and make them feel welcome. Hospitality is about becoming a safe person and cultivating a safe space in which others can experience the welcoming presence of God. It is a way to obey and serve God, because God calls us to love and serve others as though we are serving him.

This week, set aside your own expectations and insecurities in order to practice hospitality. Don’t just open your home to entertain others—embrace them fully by giving them your presence and sharing your life with them. Remember that it is your presence, not your presentation, that makes others feel welcome.
