Lead With The Body

Lead with the Body

Pray like this . . .

Matthew 6:9

When prayer becomes stale or feels like we are just “going through the motions,” it can be helpful to do something different.

One way to do this is to use our bodies during prayer. Different postures help us physically express the attitudes of our hearts to God.

The postures in the exercises over the next week will use your body to move your heart toward a place of humility, boldness, submission, gratitude, reverence, and worship.

Communication with God does not require a certain physical position, and God won’t be more likely to answer your prayers because you are on your knees rather than sitting. But remember that the body and heart are very much connected. Often when you lead with the body, the heart will follow.

This week’s exercises may feel unnatural for you. Lean into the discomfort and be honest with God about what you feel as you engage in these exercises. Ask God to open the posture of your heart as you use your body in prayer.
