Our Strong Fortress

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?

I’ve traveled to Eastern Europe numerous times for ministry purposes. On several occasions, I’ve had opportunity to visit ancient fortresses. These amazing structures were built strategically on hilltops to give residents a view of the surrounding territory. This enabled them to see enemies approaching and then prepare for battle. Even if enemies were able to make a sneak attack, the fortresses’ thick stone walls would have prevented them easy access.

God identifies himself as our fortress. He invites us to run to him for safety from our enemies. Our difficult situation itself is not our foe, but fear is. It shoots a barrage of what-if arrows at our mind. Along with fear comes the enemy of doubt, and we question God’s presence or care for us.

Making the Lord our fortress means we fill our minds with his promises. His words become our weapon and make us impenetrable. The enemies of fear and doubt will attack, but they cannot harm us.
