Day 4: Purpose Will Cost You Comfort

“If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14, NLT)

“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.’” (Daniel 3:16-18, NLT)

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, NLT)

Sometimes the greatest battle we face is not against people, but against the fear within ourselves.

One of the hardest things God ever asked me to do was accept His call into ministry. For years, I would tell God, “Lord, I’ll do anything…except preach.” Deep down, though, I already knew what He was asking of me. I could sense His hand upon my life, yet fear caused me to resist the very thing connected to my purpose.

Saying yes to God meant stepping beyond comfort, insecurity, and the opinions of others.

Fear whispered thoughts of inadequacy: What if I wasn’t qualified enough? What if I fail? At times, the fear felt overwhelming, almost as if it had a grip on my life.

Then I realized something life-changing: if I allowed fear to control me, I would miss the very purpose God created me to fulfill.

Peter faced something similar in Matthew 14:28-29. He couldn’t experience the miracle by staying in the safety of the boat. He had to step onto unfamiliar waters at Jesus’ invitation.

That’s what following God’s call often looks like. He asks us to leave what is comfortable and trust His plan and purpose for our lives.

Joshua 1:9 (NLT) became an anchor for me:

“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

I learned that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to move forward even when fear is present because you trust that God is with you.

Esther 4:14 (NLT) says:

“Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?”

Like Esther, each of us has been placed exactly where we are for a reason. God does not call us accidentally; He calls us intentionally. God has entrusted us with opportunities that no one else can fulfill in quite the same way.

The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3:16-18 reinforces this truth. When faced with pressure and opposition, they refused to bow because their confidence was in God rather than themselves. Their example taught me an important lesson: faith does not eliminate challenges, but it gives us courage to stand firm.

Prayer, fasting, and the Word of God became spiritual weapons that helped me overcome fear and recognize the tactics of the enemy. The enemy desires to stay hidden and silent through intimidation. But God empowers His people through faith, obedience, and dependence upon Him.

Looking back, I can honestly say that purpose will cost you comfort. But everything God had on the other side of obedience is far greater than the fear you must overcome to get there.

If God is calling you into something new, do not allow fear to keep you from saying yes. You do not have to feel fully qualified before you obey. He does not call the equipped, He equips the called.

Step out of the boat. Trust His voice. The same God who called you will also sustain you.

Takeaway

Fear can delay purpose, but it does not have to determine your future. Through prayer, faith, and dependence on God, you can overcome intimidation and boldly walk in the calling He has placed on your life.

Prayer

Father, help me recognize Your voice above every fear and insecurity. Give me the courage to step out in faith and embrace the purpose You have prepared for me. Strengthen me to trust You beyond my comfort zone and walk boldly in obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.
