How does overcoming doubt strengthen my faith?

A Moment with God

The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight. But the LORD told Gideon, “There are still too many! Bring them down to the spring, and I will test them to determine who will go with you and who will not.”

Doubt can be a trapdoor to fear, or it can be a doorway to confident faith. When you doubt God’s ability to help you in the face of great odds but you trust him anyway and he acts, your faith is strengthened. God wants you to express your faith in him before he acts. So when God calls you to a task, as he did with Gideon, don’t be surprised if at first it seems the obstacles are stacking up. This may be a test of your faith; God may be preparing to deepen your faith and strengthen your character so that you know it is really God—rather than your own efforts—who is coming to your rescue. As Gideon’s army dwindled, he realized he was no longer in charge. Only God could help him now. When you realize that you can’t accomplish the job on your own, are ready to give God the credit rather than take it for yourself, and courageously hold on to your faith that God has called you to do something for him, then you are in a position to see God work.
