How should I view God’s warnings?

A MOMENT with GOD

You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. . . . Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.”

Hebrews 3:13-15

The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.

Psalm 19:9-11

To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the Lord. They don’t want to listen at all.

Jeremiah 6:10

Our society is full of warnings. A red light at an intersection warns you to stop. A poison label warns you to put that product out of the reach of children. An ambulance siren warns you to get out of the way. How you view these warnings is a matter of perspective. You can look at them as intrusions that prevent you from enjoying life, or you can look at them as blessings that protect you so you can enjoy life more. God’s warnings are designed to protect his people from the consequences of foolish actions. For example, God’s warning to avoid sexual immorality prevents you from the possibility of a broken heart, an unplanned pregnancy, or a sexually transmitted disease. All too often we view these warnings as obstacles to our freedom. When we do that, we rebel against the very things that are designed to protect us. God’s warnings are his way of trying to save you from doing something you’ll later regret.

DIVINE PROMISE

If you listen to these commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today, and if you carefully obey them, the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always be on top and never at the bottom. Deuteronomy 28:13
