How can I use my competitive nature for God?

It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there.” “Winner take all.” “Nice guys finish last.” “Move up or move over.” “Winning isn’t everything—it’s the only thing.” These are the slogans of a world driven by competition. When properly focused, competition can bring out the best in you. But when infected with selfish ambition and pride, it can destroy relationships and corrode your heart. God’s Word encourages a balanced and healthy understanding of competition. Let your competitive nature drive you to improve yourself personally and sharpen your spiritual skills. The apostle Paul is a good example of a godly person who used his competitive nature in God’s service to reach people with the Good News about Jesus and to plant churches throughout the world. There’s nothing wrong with a competitive nature. Just make sure you are not competing for the wrong things with the wrong motives. Keep your drive for competition in check so you don’t hurt someone in the process of trying to win. As a Christian, you are called to work hard to do your best, not to compete against others simply to beat them. If beating others is your only goal, you honor only yourself; you have taken your eyes off God. If doing your best is your goal, you honor the God who created you.
