How can I be sure God is calling me to do something specific?

A MOMENT with GOD

After the death of Moses the Lord’s servant, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said, “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them. . . . Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.”

Joshua 1:1-2, 6

Joshua knew for certain that God was calling him to lead Israel into the Promised Land. He was sure God would give them victory. But how can you know when God is calling you to an important task? How can you be certain? The first thing to remember is that you don’t decide when you are called—God does. Joshua didn’t choose to be Israel’s leader. He was swept along with the rest of the Israelites in their desert wanderings and suddenly found himself being nominated for a leadership position. Joshua had been living faithfully for God, diligently developing his military skills, and allowing himself to be mentored by Moses and tested with responsibilities. He knew he couldn’t fulfill God’s call with just his own wits or strength. His biggest decision wasn’t whether he should be the army’s commander but whether God wanted the army to fight. When Joshua became convinced that God would lead the army, he knew he couldn’t lose. God was in it, and Joshua was the logical choice as commander—the call became clear. You don’t need to worry about how God will call you. Instead, you should concentrate on why God would call you. A humble heart and consistent obedience are two characteristics that will help you be sure of God’s call.

As for me, I look to the LORD for help. I wait confidently for God to save me, and my God will certainly hear me.
